La Rochelle

La Rochelle, in Charente Maritime, is the place to put at the top of your must do list.  It is the most fascinating, vibrant and stylish city on the French Atlantic coast, bustling with energy and excitement.  It boasts numerous shops, museums and a famous Aquarium. Steeped in history, the city features the Old Port with three very different ancient towers guarding the exit to the sea. Treat yourself to a shopping trip and a relaxing lunch at the countless superb fish restaurants all along the bustling quayside. It is also one of France’s top yachting centres and you may be lucky during your visit to see one of its many international competitions. 

Opposite La Rochelle lies the fashionable Ile de Re, which is linked by a huge sweeping bridge to the mainland. The island, famous for its salt marshes, has vineyards, farms and whitewashed villages, all with their distinctive coloured doors, which all add to its charm. Numerous cycle ways allow visitors to crisscross the island discovering the peace and quiet offered by its fantastic beaches and picnic spots.
